Roland Raymond Woelfel

Roland “Ron” Woelfel was born in November 1937 in Lucan, Minnesota to Raymond and Amelia (Hammerschmidt) Woelfel. Roland passed away at the age of 83 on Friday, September 24th, 2021 in Louisville, Colorado.

Roland graduated from Morgan High School in 1955. He enlisted in the United States Navy on July 31st, 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1960. On October 21, 1961, Roland married Carol Thomas in Redwood Falls, Minnesota and they lived in Rochester, MN until 1965. In 1965 the family moved to Boulder, Colorado where Roland and Carol remained until 1980. They moved back to Minnesota and lived in Byron from 1980-1985, after which they returned to the Boulder area. During this time, he built numerous custom homes for his family and others in the community including a summer home on Mille Lacs Lake in MN.  Roland and Carol separated in 2008 and Roland moved to Lafayette in 2012 where he would remain until his passing. From 1960 – 1980, Roland worked as a Procurement and Manufacturing Engineer at IBM, both in Boulder and in Rochester, MN. 

Roland was an avid hunter. He loved to hunt elk, deer, antelope, and wildfowl such as geese, and pheasant with his German Shorthaired Pointer bird dogs. He also loved to fish at their summer home on Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota. He played basketball and softball in city and IBM leagues and also enjoyed golfing. He loved to watch baseball, especially the Colorado Rockies.

Roland is preceded in death by his daughters, Allison Janel Woelfel and Natalie Alane Woelfel of Boulder, CO; his parents, Amelia Hammerschmidt Woelfel and Raymond Henry Woelfel of Wabasso, MN; his brothers, Donald Woelfel of LeCenter, MN, Roger Woelfel of Clements, MN, Norman Woelfel of Vail Township, MN, and Robert Woelfel of Redwood Falls, MN; by his sisters, Evelyn Woelfel of Vail Township, MN, and Eileen Smetak of Redwood Falls, MN.

Roland is survived by his wife, Carol Woelfel of Lafayette, CO; his children, Todd (Kim) Woelfel of Broomfield, CO, Gina (Allen) Bodine of Broomfield, CO; his grandchildren, Zachary (Michelle) Woelfel, and T.J. Woelfel of Thornton, CO; and by his great-grandson, Alexander Woelfel of Broomfield, CO; his sister Margaret Becker of St. Cloud, MN; brothers, Thomas (Ellen) Woelfel of Winterville, NC, Jerome “Butch” (Sheila) Woelfel of Sioux Falls, SD, and Frank (Paula) Woelfel of Milbury, MA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Wellspring at Louisville Staff Appreciation Fund at Juniper Village (Louisville) at 1078 S. 88th St., Louisville, CO 80027.


A graveside service will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery on Tuesday, October 19th, 2021 at 11:30am at Staging Area B.
