Arlene K. Martin

October 12th, 1939November 5th, 2014

Arlene Kay (Billin) Martin, 75, died November 4, 2014 in her home in Louisville, Colorado.  Arlene was born in Grand Rapids, MI on October 12, 1939 to Robert and Mildred Billin, both of whom preceded her in death.  Arlene is survived by her husband and best friend Pat, her children Jacqueline, Patrick and Jennifer, their spouses and children, and her brother Fred and his family, as well as extended family, grandchildren, and friends.  With heavy hearts we mourn her loss, and with great joy we celebrate her life.

Arlene graduated from Hope College in Holland, MI in 1962 with a degree in Elementary Education and a teaching certificate, and immediately moved to Colorado, where she taught 6th grade in Broomfield until June 1965. It was in Boulder where she met the man of her dreams, J. Patrick Martin. They married on June 18, 1965. They moved briefly to Arizona, but could not resist the pull of Boulder County and returned to the area where they have lived for the past 45 years.

Arlene dedicated her life to the children of Boulder County working in various capacities with the Boulder Valley School District.  She began as a secretary in Early Childhood Education, and after receiving her Master’s Degree in Computers in Education in 1983, worked for many years as a computer teacher at Mesa Elementary and briefly at Baseline Middle School.  She spent the bulk of her career at Mesa Elementary as a 3rd and 4th grade teacher. After touching the hearts and inspiring the minds of many of Boulder’s youth, she retired from BVSD in 2007.

Arlene will be remembered for the music she brought to the lives of the people who knew her.  An accomplished pianist, she played for almost 40 years at Crestview Christian Church in Boulder.  She also directed the church choir, sang, and brought God into the hearts and minds of the youngest of Boulder County ‘s citizens while managing the children’s ministry program.

Arlene loved to laugh and her irresistible smile will be missed by people she passed on the ski slopes, on the golf course, and in the homes of her friends.  She loved to read and to learn, and passed along her enthusiasm of education and personal perseverance to her children.  She had an active spirit with a heart for volunteering, and was happiest making a positive difference in the lives and company of others.  She loved God, who directed her life and whom she followed to her final resting place.

Funeral arrangements are being managed by Darrell Howe Mortuary of Lafayette and a memorial service will be held at 2:00pm at Ascent Community Church, 550 McCaslin Blvd, Louisville CO 80027 on Wednesday, November 12, 2014.  In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor can be sent to Ascent Community Church at the address above or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Beat AML” project via Arlene’s donation website
